frequently asked questions

How do I book in for a Pilates Class?

Contact Clare to arrange an Induction & Assessment and discuss any special requirements.  Following the Induction we can then decide on a group class which will be best for you.

What do I wear for the Pilates classes?

You should wear something you are comfortable in and can move in easily such as leggings or tracksuit bottoms and a t shirt or similar.  No footwear is required as we exercise in socks or bare feet.

Can I just turn up?

No, as the classes are very small it is essential to book a place.

I am pregnant, can I do classes?

Yes!  We have specialist classes for pregnant ladies which you are most welcome to attend.  If you have not practised Pilates before then it is inadvisable to start during your first trimester and you may wish to seek the advice of your medical practitioner before commencing classes whatever stage of pregnancy you are in.

Will Pilates help me lose weight?

Pilates is not a cardiovascular workout so you will not burn as many calories as you would doing an aerobics class for example.  However Pilates will tone the muscles and anyone who does Pilates regularly will develop a trimmer and leaner body which may then lead to a smaller dress/trouser size.

How many times a week should I do Pilates?

Ideally two or three times a week as progress will be made quickly and your body will be able to adjust more easily to a better posture.  However in the real world once a week is often all most people can fit in.  This is fine and you will still benefit from the sessions.  If you want to practise at home you can speak to Clare about specific exercises for you.

Where can I find you?

The studio is at 16 Butterfield Lane, St Albans, AL1 2HJ.  This is very close to Sopwell House Hotel, just off Cottonmill Lane.  When you arrive, please enter through the side extension and continue through to the garden. The studio awaits at the end of the garden.

What do I bring?

Just yourself!  All mats and small equipment are provided.  You may wish to bring water and if you are pregnant, you may wish to bring a small towel or cushion for extra support in some exercises.

Do I need to be fit before I come to a class?

No, Pilates is suitable for all ages, abilities and fitness levels.  However you will need to inform Clare of any specific problems, illnesses or injuries so that the class can be tailored for your level.

I am recovering from an injury, can I do Pilates?

Yes, Pilates is very beneficial for rehab so contact Clare to discuss individual requirements.

Will Pilates cure my back pain?

There are many causes of back pain.  Pilates is often recommended by medical practitioners as it helps to reallign the spine and strengthen the supporting muscles.

Is Pilates suitable for older people/seniors?

Yes!
