Are you thinking of trying a Pilates Class in St Albans?

Is something holding you back?  If you are looking for Pilates in St Albans then read on to find out why I started Pilates and why you should give it a go too.

When I was at school I hated PE.  It was awful, having to wear a horrible bottle green coloured PE kit and the embarrassment of always being picked last for team sports left me wanting to hide in a corner!  When I left school I was convinced I would never take part in a sport again (except to watch Tottenham Hotspur on the television!).

So the years went by and I didn’t do any exercise at all except for walking the dog.  Then I started horse riding and discovered that I loved it and wanted to be good at it – actually no, I wanted (and still want) to be the best that I possibly can be at it.  I had lessons and eventually went on to buy my own horse and so commenced a very steep learning curve.

Clare on her horse who started her Pilates journey

I guess I am quite a determined person, or as my husband would say – stubborn.  I continued riding and learning but it wasn’t enough and I felt I needed something more to help me become a better rider.  I had heard about Pilates but the idea of going to a class brought back all those awful memories of school PE classes!  I put it off for months but I was getting frustrated with my non-cooperative body when riding my horse.  My limbs just wouldn’t do what I wanted them to whilst riding as my core strength was so poor.

So, I made the call to the Pilates studio (well actually I probably emailed as it would be less embarrassing!) and went along to my first session.  It was a one to one to begin with and all my imbalances were addressed before getting to work.  It was great and to my surprise I wanted to go back for more.  I went back for group classes and then eventually took my teacher training.  The results of the Pilates classes were so good that I wanted (and still want) to learn as much as I could about the Pilates method.  It has changed the way I ride, has improved my flexibility, core strength and even the way I think.

People try Pilates classes for many different reasons.  A lot of the time it is as a last resort to try to help back pain.  For others they want to enjoy a little bit of time to themselves, this is so important and the value of me-time shouldn’t be underestimated.  For other people they want to get fit, tone up, lose weight, get stronger, become more flexible, the list is endless.

People don’t try Pilates classes for many more reasons.  Like me, they may have been put off exercise by school, they may be embarrassed or shy, they may be worried they won’t be able to do it, they may be worried about the cost, so many reasons it would be impossible to list them all.
